DISCRIMINATION AGAINST PITBULLS
Many of you are aware that Dade County has completely banned Pit Bulls. Last year alone 800 pit bulls(or those described by animal control as pit bulls) were picked up and destroyed just because they were pit bulls. No aggression, no incidents, just because they were the breed “pit bull”. This legislation that bans an entire breed of dog, leads to friendly, gentle, loving members of our family being rounded up and ripped from our homes and then executed.
In addition to banning members of this breed, a looming fear has always been that Miami-Dade County’s breed specific legislation forbidding pit bulls, is just the first step toward other breed specific legislation. Legislation which will include the ban of any breed that local politicians deem dangerous at the minute. This means Dobermans, Rottweilers, Labradors, Chows, Shepherds…..this list is infinite.
Currently Miami-Dade is the only county in Florida that is allowed to “profile” dogs and destroy them because of their breed. The “pit bull” ban in Miami-Dade County was enacted in 1989 and last year around 800 “pit bulls” were picked up and destroyed as a result.
Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah, the biggest animal sanctuary in the country opposes canine profiling as the problem of dangerous dogs is not remedied by the quick fix of breed-discriminatory laws. All dogs can bite. Studies of pre and post breed ban dog bite rates in the United Kingdom and Spain concluded that pit bull breed ban had no effect whatsoever on reducing dog bites.
Breed discriminatory laws cause unintended hardship to responsible owners of entirely friendly, properly supervised and well-socialized dogs that happen to fall within the regulated breed category. Although these dog owners have done nothing to endanger the public, they may be forced by the municipality to either give up their dogs or move out of their home. The pets that are given up are killed.
